Transfer switch

Hi guys, Planning on installing a 3000 watt Renogy inverter, without the transfer switch. Most post that i have read all say to install a 50 amp transfer switch, but why go to all that expense. First you have to purchase a 50 amp transfer switch, electrical wire for 50 amp, and when all installed you have to turn off electrical breaker to converter in distribution panel.

Reasons for not buying a 3000 watt inverter with transfer switch, when installed to inverter prep would have access only to 5 dedicated plugs in RV

My way of thinking is run a short 30 amp electrical wire from the load side of the 3000 watt inverter to a 30amp receptacle plug in a device box mounted to side wall. Most everyone have a 50 amp to 30 amp dogbone. Plug 30 amp extension cord to 30 amp device box, this will power distribution panel. Must turn off breaker to converter same as transfer switch.

Easier installation, and much cheaper.

What is the opinion of forum members.

I guess that will work, but why not just purchase a Victron Multiplus (3000w) and have it do everything for you. You route main shore power to it...you route battery bank to it...it outputs 50 amp service to your distribution panel. You never had to remember to flip breaker to coverter, as the Multiplus is the converter. Added benifit, is it can do power assist, meaning if you're on 30 amp power and need 50 amp, it will pull from battery bank to create 50 amp service. Then when you're no longer using all 50 amps...it will then take extra power from 30 amp shore power and charge battery bank back up. All of this, without having to lift a finger.

You are absolutely correct. Looking at cost for the multiples 3000 versus an inverter and device box and a short cable. I realize that I have to shut off power to converter which is a pain, but not full a full timer only boondock roughly 3 months per year other 3 months at a private resort. Thanks for the advice

Exactly, install a Victron MultiPlius II. You won't regret it. While you are breaking into the wiring, also consider installing a hard-wired surge protector like a Power Watchdog.
