Rubber Toilet Seal Leaking? Any good Fixes?

"A TEAM" I need Ya!

So...

The inside black rubber Toilet Seal is slow leaking so the toilet won't hold water? I have added an entire Bottle Of Thetford Toilet Seal and gasket rubber Conditioner. While it has slowed the drainage it is still leaking out but only half as fast.

Anyone have anything else I can try? Can I adjust the tension on the gasket some how from below? Is there something better I can put on it to make it swell more?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Rider, try a little Vaseline or plumber grease. If all else fails replace it.

Agree pull the gasket out and grease it up.
We used Crisco instead of a petroleum based grease to prevent degradation of the seal.

Also, I put on rubber gloves, pulled the seal, cleaned it and the groove it fits in to, applied a liberal amount of Crisco to the groove and underside of the seal and reinstalled the seal confirming it was completely seated in the groove.

Not real appealing but effective. We’ve not had leakage since even though I think we have a malformed groove in the porcelain bowl.

What you want is Danco silicone grease. You can get it from any home improvement store. It is primarily used for greasing faucet cartridges but it works wonders for this purpose. When we first went full time, I had ordered all the Thetford products thinking it was the best way to go and soon realized I was just dumping money down the drain and they never really performed that well.

I shut the water off to the toilet, put gloves on (obviously), take some toilet paper and clean the seal while stepping on the pedal to keep it open, then coat the underside and lip of the seal with the silicone grease and operate the valve a few times. I try to build up a little on the underside so it sort of "reloads" each flush This will hold for several months in our case (with occupants half flushing toilet paper that wipes off the grease over time).

May I add... DO NOT have the power roof vent running when you're holding down the pedal. 😝 Afterwards yes, but not while. I won't do that again. 😷💩

In addition to cleaning the seal and coating the underside with plumber’s grease, I’ve also had good luck with letting hot water sit in the bowl to let the seal “re-form” its shape.

I put a cup of water in the microwave and get it not quite boiling and pour it into the empty bowl.

Sounds like a trick that I will keep in my bag! Thank you for sharing!

Thanks all
Ultimately I had to buy a new seal but I fixed it this evening when I stopped at the rv site, Now it’s working like a champ!

Thanks for all the toilet tips!

Roll On!
