Pin Weights

On other vehicle forums that I frequent we have sections where we share data that is the subject of common questions where each owner might have a different measurable experience. Pin weight seems to be a measurement in the RV world that aligns to that. I’m starting this thread for us to share our weights with others. It might be helpful to share how you arrived at your numbers ( e.g., scales, fully loaded, empty, with x gallons of water, washer dryer up front).

Anyhow, I hope the thread gets traction.

2025 Paradigm 340RL. MorRyde independent suspension. Tow vehicle is a 24 F350 Lariat Ultimate, 6.7L SO CC SB.

Tanks were dry. 80% loaded for camping.

Weights of the truck unhitched are off a bit as I had a Hensley arrow hitch, two stingers, and a lot bar in the bed.

Airlift 5000 Pro dual channel air bags at 81 pounds bilaterally.

Anyhow, I came in at 2780 pounds.

Thank you! I have to say, the towing manners of the 24 F350 6.7L SO and this rig, 25 340RL with IS, B&W Companion, exceeded my expectations by a long shot. Two finger driving all the way home.

I like maintaining, modifying, and working on any vehicle (I'll take the geek/nerd moniker...just my thing I guess) So for me, this part is extremely enjoyable! My wife likes decorating and organizing so she is also enjoying the first day or two of ownership! Thank you for the well wishes!

I'm a little over on the rear axle but still under cap on the truck tires at least. The truck did not complain about the weight the way it did when I accidentally selected bumper pull instead of 5W/gooseneck on the dash menu one time.
My pin wt of 3,040 is 21% of 5W weight.
Cannot account for the 100 diff in total weights. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Thanks for sharing that. For posterity's sake, it is a 310RL, correct?

Does the Ram have a scale that lets you know if you are within posted capacities of the truck?

Yes, 2024 310RL. The '24 Ram does not have a scale per se but does sense the weight somehow. Possibly the actuator on the suspension to adjust the airbags. When I hitch up a menu comes up to select conventional trailer or fifth wheel/gooseneck. One time I inadvertently selected conventional causing it to complain about being overweight. I guess it wouldn't like >3,000 pounds on a trailer ball hitch.

I am convinced the brochure empty weights of the 340RL for 2025 are WRONG!! I trusted those numbers prior to purchasing truck and RV. Brochure says pin weight empty is 2700lbs (rough number). I ended up getting F350 single rear wheel platinum with 3906 payload capacity. I knew the pin weight loaded would be close under the configuration we planned to be - part time use, limited gear, minimal water NO GEAR IN TRUCK. We bought the Anderson hitch to keep weight to a minimum.

Now we find the reported weight by the on board system to be “over capacity”. I have not yet verified any weights at a scale. I believe the brochure weights are for the older suspension/pin box. At any rate with the very very limited amount of gear we have with us we should not be overweight.

Is anyone else finding the brochure information questionable??

It would appear that many folks here have mixed results with published weights.
I am a bit curious, did you happen to spec any options? For example, a genset and washer dryer will up your pin weight by @ 550-600 lbs.
Also don’t forget that the family factors into the truck weight.
And even what many of us call minimal gear, adds up quickly.
Without a doubt, a scale would help you understand your actual weights.

Brochure weights are not necessarily questionable however dryweights are notoriously questionable or misleading.
Determining capacity using dry weights is problematic from the start. Those dry weight figures generally don't include any options which makes them notoriously inaccurate.
For this reason it is often suggested to use GVW to determine towing parameters.
With that in mind the 3906 payload capacity is marginal from the start.
A 16K GVW fiver is solidly in dually territory.

To @Lantley 's point, Alliance shares "...approximate base weight of the trailer without optional equipment included..." If you look at my pin weights above (2025 340RL, no generator, base solar, toppers, independent suspension), they are not far off from the brochure. Independent suspension improves weight distribution compared to leaf springs.

I'm curious if you have checked the hitched rig alignment to see if it is nose down. If it is nose down, lowering the kingpin, or raising the hitch head, may get you closer to where you want to be by shifting load to be more equally shared by the truck and the trailer. @Lantley is correct again that this rig is definitely in dually territory, though mine towed flawlessly fully loaded, no water, with my 2024 F350 SRW 6.7L PS, 3.31 rear end, CC, SB, Lariat Ultimate, 7230 rear axle rating with 4140 in available payload. If any of you are here in Florida, you know we had terrible wind here last week and I was not pushed around at all when towing. It tracked absolutely beautifully!

Though this does not address your question, we are very likely going to the Gen Y hitch from a B&W Companion Slider. This will remove ~300 pounds from the payload when loaded.

Suggest you take it to a scale. My F-350 SRW onboard scale indicated I was at or just over the truck's capacity, however, after weighing at my local truck scale, I verified I was well under the limit. The onboard system is clearly not calibrated very accurately.
