Tahoe enough?

So, I currently own the 2019 Chevy Tahoe with max trailoring. I have had no problems at all pulling the 4700 pound Venture Sonic 220VBH for the past 7 years with it. I just traded up to a 6400 pound, 3 foot longer, Alliance Delta 262RB. Over the next 9 months all my travel plans will be on relatively flat terrain. After that, I’m going to be retired. That leaves me some time to feel this new trailer out behind a Tahoe. Just prior to retiring I will need to buy a new tow vehicle.

so thoughts on getting the 2027 Chevy Tahoe?

if that is not doable, I’m willing to go to the 2027 Chevy Silverado with extended crew cab.

The last time I bought a trailer, my first, I bought the car first. I knew it could only tow x but for some reason when I went to buy the trailer it went over the max weight. So I had to then trade in the 1 year old vehicle for the Chevy Tahoe.

The big question is...what is your payload capacity of the Tahoe? Maybe around 1,300lbs? The tongue weight of the 262 is probably over 1,000lbs. Add the hitch(75lbs), driver, passenger, camping stuff and you'll be way over that payload capacity. Can the Tahoe do it? Yes. Can it do safely?

My $0.02 it is always best to have added capacity & not need it than to be maxed out at the start,,,dry weights are not good data to use as a basis in my experience,,,forum has several posts discussing the pros/cons & advise to consider choosing best matches of tow vehicles & trailers from some very knowlegeable members,,,good reading,,,answers alot of questions,,,,comes from those that know suspensions,,,loading etc. good luck,,,👍🍀🌞!!

Don't forget the tires on the Tahoe. I don't think you will have a good experience with a Tahoe. I have heard a story from a motor head friend of mine, that a friend of his, went to those "Big Rim and Thin tire" setups, which eliminated the tire roll tremendously. I don't remember the weights, but if you commit, but not happy with the ride, maybe it could be a fix.

We had a 35' travel trailer that we pulled with a 2021 Tahoe with max towing package and it worked great for short more localized trips. The first trip in the winter to Florida was all it took to realize we were going to need a bigger (boat) I mean tow vehicle. The 18 wheelers had there way with me, counter steering away as they sucked me in going buy an countering back after they passed. True white knuckling all the way down and back. Blew an airshow in SC and was able to have the Chevy dealership in Fla. replace under warranty. Got back home and bought a Chevy 2500hd immediately.

So yes your Tahoe will handle around town just do not take it out for long hauls with the 18 wheelers. :)

Why did you jump into the 2500 instead of the 1500?

When i looked at the numbers I wanted to have a little cushion. Especially on the payload capacity on the truck. You will find that the superdutys handle the towing very well. Looking back i wished that I had moved to the 3500hd as 2 years later we moved up to the 5th wheel and had to change trucks.

Can you tow it with a 1/2 ton? You can calculate the numbers ( GVWR, payload, rear axle max, etc.)
A little cushion is worth it in emergency situations.
Remember you can never have too much truck.

Good luck

As one that just traded up from a 2022 F250 to a 2026 F350, Midnight Rider has the solution. As a sife note, I had some work done on my F350 and was given a new F150 loaner. Lets just say that the ride difference is SIGNIFICANTLY better in a Super Duty. You can tell in the frame and just how it rides. The 8' bed also makes a huge difference in ride. Go as big as you can. Cost difference is really not much more!
Happy Glamping!
