Shoe garage grill closure thingy and another secret stash?

I have already converted the area under the head of the bed in my 310 to a secure storage box, and today I popped out the panel in the basement covering the back of the shoe garage/ steps to upper level. I was looking at what it would take to plug off the furnace return grill for the summer as I have read here that when exhaust fans are running it pulls warm air in through the grill. And even worse it is an egress point for mosquitoes. Anyway it looks like a 12”x30” thin wooden or sheet metal panel would work fine for plugging off the grill. It would be nice perhaps if Alliance offered a sliding closure panel?

As part of my investigation I found a rather large space under the step area that would I believe hold a significant amount of things you might want to keep out of the reach of thieves. Ammunition, SBRs, or gold chains. I wear a lot gold chains so I’m thinking this will be a great stash for several hundred pounds of chains.
Cheers

I too have been looking for a place for hundreds of pounds of gold chains!

Interested in the underbed secure storage solution though. Is it quick access?

Not very quick access. You have to pull the mattress down to the dresser so you can open up the hatch. It would probably take a minute or so to get something out maybe less if you practice a bit

They sell decorative, thin metal plates that only require minor trimming to fit that under-step area. These are available at Hobby Lobby. Trim it to fit, glue a piece of window screen to the back of it, and then screw it in place under the step. Problem solved, and you will not block airflow to the underbelly. I guess if you want to block it in the summer, you could stick a piece of cardboard over it. However, in the winter the heat needs to flow through there to help keep the underbelly warm and prevent pipes from freezing.

I’m going to make up two plates, a screen to keep bugs out and a solid screen for warm weather to keep hot air from being pulled in. Might also put a rug or a box in the storage area to keep the gold chains from sliding around.
Just have to finger out a different method for holding the wall, maybe a gate latch or wing nuts.

I'm shocked nobody chimed in with the impact the hundreds of pounds of gold chains would have upon your pin weight.

Sarcastic humor, for the record.
