newb LP regulator question

Avenue 32RLS. The regulator has auto changeover, per manual.
1. What do the red bars signify? If the lever is vertical I assume auto changeover. If I move it left or right, there is a horizontal red bar. Am I correct in assuming that left is one tank and right is the other? Does the bar signify full/empty?
2.. How do I know which tank is empty and needs filling?
3.. Can I run on a single tank until empty and then switch to the other? (lever to left or right)

thanks

The lever needs to be all the way to one side. Which ever side you turn it to will be the tank it is pulling from and the other will be the back up. Keep the valves open on both. The window will be solid red when the tank is empty then you can switch to the other side and remove the empty to get it filled. With it in that position it will try to pull from both tanks. Not sure why it has the vertical red line but it will be solid red when it emptys mine is set to the cylinder on the door side now.image.jpg

Not intuitive to operate- finally spotted arrow on lever. Instructions in manual no help either. Past campers I have had used the red flag / green flag. Took me a while to figure it out. Thank goodness for this forum.

I installed these LP Gas Stop devices about a year ago, after I had an entire tank leak in front of my house. I finally smelled the gas, INSIDE our home. Could have been a complete disaster. In addition to the gas stop feature, it also provides you with a small window to see gas level.

I bought one of these to keep cost down as I am only using one tank at a time. I also had a faulty propane switch years ago at my house where the whole tank leaked out.

I’m glad I saw this thread the 2023 we purchased used shows red all the time no matter which way I throw the lever whether the tanks are full or empty. I just assumed the gauge is bad or is it possible that I am missing something.

We have only had ours a week, so I have only seen it with full tanks. Finally figured out the long end of the lever points toward the tank you are initially using. There is a partial red bar in the window, but I gather when the first tank tuns out it will switch to the second tank and the window will turn more red. Cold snap coming so will find out soon.

Thanks but I am trying to figure out why mine stays red all the time.
Based on your post, it sounds like you have some sort of failure going on within your device. The window flag should change as noted in this thread.

You might consider Mopeka LP sensor’s, they are very accurate and with the app, you can receive text messages at a certain level reminding you to refill soon. It gives you the freedom of not have to check your flag regularly.

Thanks I have been only opening one tank at a time and when it runs out at 2:00 in the morning I go out in my underwear and switch tanks then go in the morning and get the empty filled. After I put pants on and get warmed up.I also have a 20 lb tank underneath As backup.

So, if I see someone running around a campground in cooler months in their underware messing with their propane tanks I should assume its you?🤣 also glad to hear you put your pants on before going to get them filled!!
Have you ever tried opening both tanks to see how the change over flag operates?

Likewise I use the one tank approach. I also use electric space heaters to supplement the furnace.
Usually I notice the Lp tank is empty via the fridge not working vs. the furnace. Yes I have a lp/electric Norcold fridge.

I will give that a try.

We also use the fireplace and a ceramics heater in the bathroom. Didn’t think we would have this in north Florida but its been getting down into the low 30s.

Finally ran the first tank out. It’s now 20° outside and I have a solid red window. Unfortunately, it didn’t switch over to the other tank so I did it manually. Now the furnace won’t start.

Bleed the air out of the lines by using the stove.
Ignite on of the burners and leave it on 30 seconds or so to get the gas flowing.
Then try the furnace again.
