hot skin

2022 30RLS

Getting our rig ready for vacation next week and discovered a hot skin condition.

  • Polarity into the rig is correct.
  • Disconnected the water heater and no change
  • volt meter shows about 30-40 volts from the trim around front storage access to ground, cement rig is setting on.
Looking for some help to identify the cause and a safe fix. don't have time to get the rig into the shop prior to departing.

any direction or advise would be helpful

Thank you in advance.

My advise would be to call in a Professional electrician to investigate your concerns.
This video contains some information that helps to explain the situation.

Had the same issue with my 30RLS. I keep the rig at home and plug it into 30amp using a pigtail adapter. Ended up being the adapter. It was sending voltage down the neutral.

Thanks all for the input. Very frustrating troubleshooting and no root cause identified yet.

I have watch a couple of Todd's videos on the subject as well as some from others. A lot out there on how to identify the issue but not much on how to get to the root cause or at least narrow it down.

I also am at home and did try a different adapter and even put the EMS in line with no change. Will reach out to the dealer tomorrow and also Alliance to see if they have any suggestions on how to ID the source of the issue.

Please keep the ideas and suggestions coming.

Thanks again.

I would think that you could narrow down your issue by turning the circuit breakers off at the panel one at a time to see when the voltage you are measuring goes away. At that point, you would know what circuit you need to trace out.

Thanks again for the suggestions. Think I got it.

I did the breaker by breaker thing with inconsistent results, which lead me to believe it was something prior to that causing the issue. Testing the plugs inside the RV and they all showed open ground.

Ended up calling a RV tech to help with the troubleshooting. It turned out to be a ground tab in the plug on the trailer. The part that is intended to make contact with the cord plug from the power source was flattened instead of being bent out like the new one I purchased. The attached photo shows the tab being bent towards the center to make contact with ground contact on the cord plug. Bent this out on the existing plug and moving the cord plug could not make the open ground condition occur. For now running with the original plug with the tab bent as shown, but have the new one as a backup.

Glad you got it figured out!

While not a low cost upgrade, this is just one more reason I hate that darn "twist-n-lock" 50 amp connection. Moving to the "Smart Plug" was a great option for us.

I like the smart plug. I just have too many twist lock style adapters for various set ups. I don't want to abandon all of those connectors if I were to convert.
