Filling Fresh water tank

This may seem kinda of a "no brainer" question, but gonna ask it anyways. I dry camp so I need to fill my fresh water tank. Without relying on "Lites" telling me it is full, what are some tricks others use? Some type of over flow "Y", flow meter, etc as part of the connection? It is a solid connection into the tank. I fill it using a external pump (same one as in coach) from 55 gallon barrel. I am thinking using a flow meter, so it the flow stops it is full. thx

Are you thinking of setting flow meter to 75 gallons (whatever the capacity is) and the meter automatically cuts off?
That will work if tank is totally empty but if tank is "x" amount or 20% full that method will not know the starting point.

I would not care how many gallons, I was thinking when the flow meter stops flowing (registering gallons) would tell me the tank is full. My old tralier was not a solid connection, just a cutoff hose and when water started comin out told me it was full. I think putting in a "Y" type connection may work also as water should only come out of the Y is when the tank is full.

Not sure what model coach you have, but our 310 RL has a fresh water tank overflow pipe. When the tank gets full water comes out of the pipe and drains on the ground. It would seem to be the only accurate indicator of a full tank, given your fill start point would alway be a variable.

Our Valor has an overflow pipe sticking out of the underbelly. When I fill the fresh to full, I do it until it comes out of that.

on ours, there are a red and blue pex pipe for low point drains, then another white or blue (can't recall right now) pex pipe near the fresh water drain valve. This is the overflow.

I use a flow meter and dry camp frequently at events and this has worked really well for me. they have a pretty good accuracy and have always felt like I was full without overflowing. I usually stop putting water in when I get around 1 gallon of capacity. they are relatively inexpensive and have a 2032 battery. just reset the total gallons each use and make sure it is installed facing the right direction. I have my setup on quick release connectors as well so everything I use to fill is ready to connect, elbow, hose, filter, pressure regulator, flow meter, etc.

I simply fill by timing it. I generally fill at home 22 minutes and I'm just about full. Within 1-2 minutes more and I'm done.
