Cold Air Return?

i assumed the grill in the (interior) steps of our 340RL was the cold air return for the furnace, but i wasn't expecting a wide open hole into the pass-thru. Right now i have some 12" w furnace filters cut down, but want build something a little more ... resistant? Anything that flies, crawls or hops into the crawl space now has a wide-open path to the space my wife would rather that they didn't. Any ideas?

I am not sure what your question is. We have a 340RL, can you be more specific?

One of my winter projects is to add decorative screen and screen mesh to that area. Becky's hates the flies coming in when the basement door is open.

You can get this type of decorative material at Hobby Lobby stores. That is what I used to make my stairwell covers. Easy fit with just a little trimming.
