I just watched somebody experience the same thing in Savannah,GA (Creek Fire). I no longer use my awnings. I set up a 10x20 pop up and anchor one side to the trailer (Using cam ropes) and the other side with 8 inch 3/8" spikes along with guide lines. So far, I have weathered 20 MPH winds, according to the weather apps...to include the greater gusts. I simply do not trust the connection methods to the Azadel sides and the shock absorbing systems of the awnings.

I think they are all created equal, but there have been others here, that swear by the wind sensors available (In case you are away). I think the sensors are good, but I struggle to think they can respond to a micro burst. Maybe some lesser winds will happen and the sensors bring them in.

Sorry to here it happened and I am sure other more experienced people on this forum, have a more informed opinion on awning systems. I choose to not use mine, except for shade creation. I always pull them in, when leaving my rig.

Thoughts: I have been using drywall anchors inside my rig to attach heavy items to the Azadel walls. 4 years in and I have not had one problem. The threads are so large and the anchors can hold so much weight, it makes me wonder. What breaks, if I mount the awning using drywall anchors? It would beat the hell out of the fine thread machine screws, they are using!! So would the awning break...or would it pull out a huge piece of Azadel? Curious minds want to know!!

I have an idea on what would break. The drywall screw before anything else, especially since there is a backing plate behind the awning. Drywall screws have almost no shear strength and the manufacturers don't have to publish those values as they are non-structural. They're brittle and break whereas structural screws flex then deform before breaking. You can find structural stainless steel, coarse thread, flush mount screws that would have plenty of shear strength. I've never had to replace an awning (came super close as a new owner of our first rig...hit the plastic motor cover on the steel support beam at the storage facility). If I did, I would find a structural screw and use VHB where the awning hits the rig.
