Awning support arm install

I have a 21' awning on my 262RB and it has a very minor sag in the middle. I want to add a metal Carefree awning support arm. It has a rectangular plate that's supposed to be installed first and then the support arm and cradle installs on top of that. The plate requires four rivets for mounting and the support arm installs with two lag bolts. I've seen a lot of pictures where the awning support is installed with just the two lag bolts(and Butyl tape), there is no plate. In fact, one picture on the Carefree packaging shows it installed without the plate.

I don't want to put any more holes in my RV than necessary. Is that mounting plate really necessary, if so, why? Thanks.
