Insignia Microwave Door latch

We have an Insignia microwave model #NS-OTR16SS8Q. The locking mechanism suddenly refuses to work, I removed the cover
and found no broken parts, it just has a sliding latch no springs, it freely slides up and down but it won’t latch the door closed. Any suggestions?

Upon further investigation I found this on the Best Buy site;

“I had the same problem I removed the inside plastic frame ( with a table knife ) very easy to come off. Them removed the 6 screws holding the steel framing and window. I opened it enough to expose the latch part. I discovered that a small plastic hook had broken off where the spring is suppose to hook up. I took a very small ZIP LOCK , wrapped it around the spring and through hole in the hook mechanism. Tighten the zip lock to bring spring to approximately where the hook was. Cut the left over of the Zip lock. Put it all back together and Voila Works like new again. Cost was a bit of time and a Zip lock.”

It worked. Problem solved. Apparently this is a common problem with this model after about 2 years of use.

My latch broke yesterday and i ran across the same article. Cheap quick fix.

Ours broke this Spring, while on 5 month trip. The fix is somewhat easy, just need to slowly work through it.
