Gnat Defense

Hi Allies,
Hoping someone out there has suggestions for a best practice to combat gnats in the camper.
We have been on a trip since Thursday at the same campground and this afternoon, we started to notice gnats inside the camper.
We never leave the doors or window screens or even basement doors open , so other than slide seals and slide gaps, I am a bit perplexed on how they are getting in all of the sudden.

More importantly, once you have a few inside, are there any suggestions on a capture/kill method?

Thanks in advance!

We get them too. They seem to come from produce or fresh flowers from grocery store when brought into camper. Usually it is after buying grapes. We will put out apple cider vinegar with a little dish soap and it catches them.

with so many different species of gnats, it's hard to say what problem you're having with them or what kind. we have a 2024 Avenue 32 RLS and do a lot of camping with hookups and we have found or heard that the black gnats in the bathroom are coming up through the drain possibly. we installed and extra gate valve at the end of our sewer hookup on the trailer itself and we keep that closed. that will stop any gnats from coming up into the tanks at the other end of the gates and if you open them and flood them out and drain your valves that should push a lot of them back down into the sewer area. but if once your tanks are drained and you leave it open they can fly back up and come through into your gray tanks and black tank and they somehow find their way in. we're trying to do everything to keep them out of the bathroom but we still see them here and there in the shower and on the bathroom walls

SKYSKIOC, thanks for your input. We have the extra gate and keep it closed on our plumbing outlet. They just seems to show up out of no we’re on this trip, we have never had this issue before. All of our drains have functioning traps, so in our case, while not ruling it out, I do not believe they are coming thru the plumbing.

In an attempt to combat them last evening, we pour a little red wine in a glass and covered it with plastic wrap and poked a few small holes in the plastic. We have quite the catch this morning!

And yes, before anyone says it, I fully understand that is a sin to waste that wine to captures the little buggers, but hey we had to do what we had to do!🤣

A “sinless” alternative…use apple cider vinegar as an alternative to wine. It works about as well.

If they are the biting variety, vanilla will keep them off of you (without melting plastic like DEET does)!

We recently had a fruit fly party going on that lasted a few weeks. The annoying thing is they ride the pressure wave in front of the electric zapper wand so it's hard to zap them like we do with regular flies. Ultimately red wine vinegar (because we had it on hand) and dish soap in a cup killed enough to knock down the repeating life cycle.
